The clip creates an up and down pecking motion that causes the ink to advance and retract.

The side of the upper barrel that faces the woodpecker is textured like the bark of a tree and  there is a small indented hole that looks like the beak of the bird was making it.

The opposite side of the upper barrel is engraved with pictures of other species of birds. The cap looks like a bird nest with eggs in it.
